I haven't been on this account in a while, but I wrote a new fic last month, while I was excited for the then upcoming release of The Scarlet Bullet and a bit annoyed at the ongoing pandemic.

Summary:
“I am this close to giving myself a haircut at this point, Mama.”
Masumi stood at the bathroom mirror, trying to push her hair in a way that wouldn’t hang in her eyes, without much luck as it just kept dropping back in front of her eyes. Sighing, she gave up for the moment and went to flop across the bed rather than continue to fuss over her now too long for her tastes hair.
(Honestly, having hair just past her shoulders is probably helping with getting people to not mistake her for a boy, Masumi thought, but she’d never been one for this much hair. It’s only due to circumstances that it’s gotten this long at all.)
Across the room, Mary looked up from her book, frowning slightly at Masumi’s annoyance with her hair. “Have you considered cutting it?”
“Can’t, I don’t want to risk bringing the virus back. You know we can’t have you getting sick.” Masumi looked at her mother as if this was a ridiculous suggestion, which given the pandemic, it kind of was. In return, Mary shook her head, coughing slightly as if echoing her daughter’s concern.
“No, I meant cutting your own hair. We have scissors on the table and a mirror in the bathroom.”
Masumi perked up, apparently not having been serious about her earlier comment on cutting her own hair, and considered the idea with some uncertainty. “...I don’t know, I’ve never done that before. I’m worried about messing up the back since I can’t see it, at the very least, and I’m not sure if I can cut straight.”
Mary was silent for a moment before abruptly standing up, setting her book on a nearby table before motioning at the bathroom to a surprised Masumi.
“Alright, I’ll help you trim it. Go wait in the bathroom for me, Masumi.” Masumi blinked, startled, before following her mother’s directions and heading to the bathroom to wait. It wasn’t long before Mary turned up with a stepstool and the scissors, setting the stool on the ground behind Masumi before turning to grab a towel from beside the shower. As Mary climbed up onto the stepstool and draped the hotel towel over her daughter’s shoulders, Masumi couldn’t help but feel a bit surprised at this turn of events.
“Thanks, Mama. I didn’t expect you to do this for me.” In turn Mary gave a slight smile, her focus on assessing Masumi’s hair and how much to trim off.
“It’s not a problem, Masumi. I assume you want it your normal length?”
“Yes, please.”
The two fell into a silence as Mary went to work on Masumi’s hair, interrupted only by the sound of the scissors cutting through the thick hair and the occasional cough from Mary.
“How’s your cough doing?” Masumi watched her mom in the mirror, frowning slightly at the coughs as she tried to resist turning to look. Her mom had said it was a cold she got from falling into the Thames when she was poisoned, but the cough had never gone away and she couldn’t help but wonder if that drug had something to do with it.
“It’s no worse than usual. Could you turn your head to face the shower?” Masumi filled in the unspoken info, that it hadn’t gotten better either, and resolved to try and ask Conan if the drug could cause health issues the next time they talked. But first she’d have to suggest the idea to her mom, given how hard it’s been to get her to trust Conan.
“I could ask Conan-kun or Ai-chan about if the drug causes health issues if you want, Mama. Then at least we’d have an answer.” Masumi watched Mary’s reflection in the mirror as she considered the idea, her face giving no hint as to what she was thinking about the idea.
“...Alright, but be careful about it. I’m still not sure how much to trust him, but we need information.”
“I will, Mama.” That was always the standard, being careful about getting info on the poison and its antidote. Masumi couldn’t help but wonder if Conan would even talk to her about this, given how insistent he was on Not Being Kudou Shinichi. Maybe she could ask Ran about it, she thought, since Ran would likely know if Conan had any health issues.
Masumi was so in thought on how to get answers that she didn’t notice how the haircut was progressing until Mary asked her to turn around and face her so that she could cut the pieces of hair that had been getting in her face. Doing as told, she closed her eyes against any loose strands, wrinkling her nose slightly as bits of trimmed off hair tickled it. There was the feeling of the last few bits being trimmed off, a pause, and then-
“You can look now, Masumi.”
She opened her eyes, turning to face the mirror to see the final result. It was perhaps a bit rough, the result of a home haircut, but it was short, which was what Masumi wanted in the first place. Scruffing her hair to remove any remaining loose bits, she couldn’t help but grin at how it turned out.
“Thanks, Mama! It looks great!” In return Mary gave a rare smile back, taking the hair covered towel off Masumi’s shoulders to put it with the rest of the laundry. Meanwhile Masumi went to go find the broom and dustpan to clean up the bathroom, taking the chance to grab her phone to check the time as she went.
“Hey, you want me to order something from Ramen Ogura? It’s getting late.”
The response came quick as Mary folded up the stepstool and returned it to its usual place. “That would be fine, Masumi. I’ll have my usual.”
“Alright, I’ll place an order once I clean up this hair.” As Masumi went to go sweep up the dropped hair, her thoughts wandered to what she wanted to order. It’d been a while since she’d gotten anything from Ramen Ogura, so anything sounded good.
But first, cleaning up the hair. Checking out the menu options could come later.

Masumi needs a haircut, but can’t go get one. The answer is simple: get it cut at home.
