darkestabsol: (extra serious)
What we know:

-PornHub has expressed interest, though it isn’t clear if they actually entered discussions with Verizon.

-It’s unclear if Verizon will find a buyer.

What does all this mean?

-Verizon likely no longer wants to deal with Tumblr, likely because they can’t monetize it.

-I mean, according to the linked article Verizon Media Group ‘laid off 7% of its workforce in January [2019], including employees at the media websites HuffPo and TechCrunch.’

-And they already sold Flickr to SmugMug in 2018, which is another signal that they’re not doing so well.

-They likely won’t want to deal with the site if they can’t find a buyer, meaning it’s possible (NOT GUARANTEED) that they may just shut down Tumblr if they can’t sell it.

And if PornHub does buy Tumblr?

-PornHub is…not great, given that they allow people to upload stolen content and are known to host transphobic content, among other things.

-Buying Tumblr would let them undo the content ban, but would give them even more control over that type of content online, and could allow them access to steal more content from Tumblr.

Overall, I’m very leery of what’s happening. There is no Tumblr shutdown at this time, and Verizon is trying to sell Tumblr, but…I’m not sure what’s going to happen with this. I just don’t know.
